New York nonprofit J-Bird Music for The Arts is pleased to announce its First Annual Benefit Gala on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 from 7-9 PM in New York City! JBMFTA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides services that nurture a community supporting performing arts and music in education for youths throughout New York State. The Benefit Gala will take place in the historic ArtSpace Building / PS109 located at 215 E. 99th Street in upper Manhattan. Proceeds from the event will go towards the organization’s mission of supporting performing arts in New York education.
The event will be hosted by the organization’s Founding Executive Director, Joanne J-Bird Phillips, who is a Bronx native and a long-time resident of Long Beach, NY. Having enjoyed and performed music most of her life, learning drums at age seven, Joanne is a Hartke endorsed bass guitarist and hand-percussionist. Phillips founded J-Bird Music for The Arts six years ago in order to help keep the performing arts alive and accessible to all. Through special events and collaborations, JBMFTA provides resources, musical instruments and necessary equipment so that all young people may experience the joy and excitement of learning, performing and/or appreciating the performing arts.
The Benefit on Oct. 3rd will feature special performances by two young musicians from Goshen Central High School in Orange County, NY, where JBMFTA provided a flute in a hard shell case and a new acoustic guitar for their music program. In addition, Lexy Cassell, student at New York’s prestigious Long Island High School of the Arts and the first Youth Ambassador for J-Bird Music for The Arts will be performing as well as, NYC singer-songwriter, Jordan Siwek who will bring his energetic live performance of his original songs from his new album, Sun Inside You.
The event is sponsored by Celebrity Fashion Eyewear Designer Corey Woods, who will be giving one free pair of his designer sunglasses to each person attending the event. Private Chef, Chris LaVecchia, will dazzle the crowd with his delicious lite bites during the evening. In keeping with the nonprofit’s mission in supporting music and other performing arts, Samsung will be providing a “music composition station” equipped with four Tab S4 tablets. They will also provide a Note 9 “selfie station” and the Gear 360 Camera to livestream the event on the JBMFTA Facebook page!

In 2012, Joanne founded J-Bird Music for The Arts, Inc. with the vision of reviving arts programs by providing much needed equipment, instruments and resources in order to enrich the lives of youths through arts education. She wanted to bring that same joy, excitement and creativity to youths everywhere, especially in areas that are under-served or underfunded.
Through J-Bird Music for The Arts, Joanne brings her vision alive. From her tireless efforts as a brain tumor survivor with a second chance to live and continue on this mission, she has provided much needed equipment and support to music and arts programs throughout New York State including Still Waters In A Storm in Brooklyn, Long Beach High School in Long Island and Goshen Central High School in Orange County, NY.

Anna, a NYSSMA Award winning music student, has aspirations to attend college for Mechanical Engineering and plans to work for NASA. In school, she’s a member of the Chamber Orchestra, Jazz Voices and Varsity Choir.
Lexy Cassell, a multi-talented musician/singer/songwriter and highly accomplished “SK8RGrrl”, is a teen student at New York’s prestigious Long Island High School of the Arts. The “Princess of Teen Rock/Pop” is no slouch when it comes to live performance, delivering a dynamic on-stage presence that has received accolades from both teens and adults alike. We look forward to having her perform at our October 3rd fundraiser and we’re honored to have Lexy, who has recently given an audience to Billy Joel, as the first Youth Ambassador for J-Bird Music for The Arts.
Lexy will be appearing at NYC’s Radio City Music Hall and singing in their legendary annual Christmas Spectacular in December 2018 as well as appearing in the upcoming musical “Batboy: A Yankee Miracle”.
NYC native Jordan Siwek has been playing piano and singing for as long as he could walk and talk. As a child actor, Jordan appeared on SNL and Conan O’Brien between 1996 and 2003. Jordan also played Gavroche in Les Miserables on Broadway in 1997. With influences in classic rock, blues, and soul, Jordan’s songwriting focuses on turning darkness into light, with messages of love, hope, and unity. Jordan has recently released his debut album, Sun Inside You, July 13th. The theme of the album is the balance of darkness and light despite hardships, and finding unity in the midst of division.
